A BOOK REVIEW:
What an encouraging book! Although it took me awhile to finish reading it (because books with spiritual themes cannot be read lightly), I learned so much. Reading about Madeleine’s process as a writer and a practicing follower of Jesus helped me understand myself better. I also appreciated that the author, Sarah Arthur, didn’t back away from the difficult aspects of Madeleine’s life and writing but instead chose to present a balanced and nuanced portrait. Arthur not only interviewed many who knew and loved Madeleine, but also wrote from a long history of enjoying Madeleine’s books and having a personal relationship with Madeleine’s close friend, Luci Shaw.
I identified with Madeleine’s fascination with science, with art as a spiritual discipline, and with being “such witnesses of Christ’s love that other people will want to know what makes us glow.”
I can tell when a book is good by the amount of underlining and sticky notes in it when I finish. This book accumulated many! It also inspired me to read more of Madeleine’s adult books, especially Walking on Water. This book is not only for L’Engle fans, but for artists of all types and those who love learning about the faith journeys of other believers.
